Louis van Gaal wary of Anthony Martial praise after Di Maria

“He has to go on a long road like Martial, although it could be a little bit shorter because he has been playing longer on that level.

Louis van Gaal has admitted he is wary of predicting success for Anthony Martial on the basis of his superb start — in case he emulates Angel Di Maria in unwanted fashion.

“Draxler was a very young talent when I was in charge of Bayern [Munich], so I know him,” Van Gaal told United’s official website. He is a very good player.”

Van Gaal admitted he was surprised by how prolific Martial has been, telling MUTV: “More or less, because in Monaco he doesn’t score so much. Julian Draxler, 22, became Wolfsburg’s 35m record signing from Schalke at the end of the transfer window and Van Gaal sees similarities with Martial.

Martial, who could cost Manchester United up to 58.8 million, has begun his Old Trafford career with a flurry of goals, including four in his first four games, as well as the assist for Wayne Rooney’s strike against Sunderland on Saturday.

“In the beginning, for example, Di Maria has a lot of assists and a lot of goals so we have to wait and see if he is consistent.”

The ESPN FC team discuss Manchester United’s performance thus far in the season, and believe that they can only get better. We have to wait and see because it is still the start.

United face Wolfsburg in the Champions League on Wednesday when another expensive young player is set to feature.

But Di Maria, the club record 59.7 million signing, scored three times and recorded as many assists in his first five games for United, although never found the net for them again in the Premier League and joined Paris Saint-Germain in the summer after losing his place in Van Gaal’s team.
